Elderly Gorilla Trekking in Uganda
Regardless of visitors’ age or ability, many travellers may be wondering if gorilla trekking excursions are eligible for them. However, visitors should be informed that gorilla trekking is not restricted to only the young and energetic individuals or the youth. Travellers are therefore cautioned against choosing other wildlife encounters and missing out on their favourite due to conditions such as age or physical capacity. Travellers should be aware though, that most people who go gorilla tracking are at least 45 years old. This implies that as long as you can board an aircraft, you are always old enough to track gorillas. For those who have been hesitant or afraid to go on this amazing gorilla trekking adventure with their parents or grandparents.
The gorilla trekking experience allows visitors to look for mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Visitors should arrive at the information center by 7:30 for a briefing, where park rangers will check passports and identify those needing special assistance. Trekkers who are 60 years and older but fit will be assigned to a nearby gorilla family for easier tracking. Those in excellent shape can request a longer trek for a more adventurous experience. It’s important for travelers to explore the jungle fully rather than choosing easier treks based on others’ advice. During the trek, visitors can enjoy stunning views of wildlife, plants, and various bird and insect species.
Gorilla families are assigned based on hiking ability, physical fitness, and the availability of gorilla permits. When most permits are booked, it becomes harder to have an easy trek. Elderly visitors should book their trips 3-4 months in advance to secure a gorilla group close to a tracking point. Those doing double gorilla trekking will be assigned a different group each day. Only 8 people are allowed to track a specific gorilla group daily to reduce stress on the gorillas and protect them from human diseases.
Travellers should inform their tour agency about any fitness concerns or physical challenges before booking a gorilla trekking safari. This allows the operator to plan with appropriate equipment according to park guidelines. A special tour van and additional support like porters or sedan chairs may be provided if needed. The tour operator will include the costs for these services along with the regular tour price. Sedan chairs have handles, a steel base, and seat belts to assist those who may struggle with the trek.
During gorilla trekking, elderly visitors can be carried on a stretcher made from local bamboo. A team of about 12 strong porters works in shifts of four to carry the stretcher, allowing the men to rest while ensuring safe transport through the jungle. These porters know the terrain well and ensure that visitors never touch the ground until they find the mountain gorillas. Once located, visitors spend up to an hour observing the gorillas’ behavior. After the experience, porters will carry the elderly back to the starting point where a driver guide waits. The cost for using a sedan or carrier chairs is approximately $400-$500, which also includes the porters’ service. Additionally, visitors who are not elderly but have fitness concerns can hire porters to help carry their luggage and assist during the hikes.
Porters’ fees range from $15 to $25, and all trekkers receive simple hiking sticks for support. The elderly may need to bring their own. Hiring porters helps the community by providing income, as many are students or married men supporting their families. This support significantly impacts their lives. For gorilla trekking safaris, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is noted as the best destination for the elderly due to its less mountainous terrain.
Bwindi is different from other national parks in the Virunga ranges due to its lower altitude and flatter trails. Most gorilla families live in the lower areas, making hikes easier. Bwindi Forest Park has the highest number of mountain gorillas and offers 22 habituated families for tracking, plus one family under habituation. The park has four trekking sectors: Buhoma, Rushaga, Ruhija, and Nkuringo, each providing unique experiences. Travelers should book permits 3-4 months in advance to get assigned to a gorilla family close to the starting point.
Gorilla trekking in the Ruhijja sector is great for elderly travelers, as they tend to finish earlier than in other areas. However, the time spent searching for gorillas can vary and is hard to predict. Some lucky trekkers might find a gorilla family within 30 minutes of starting.
Before starting your trek, it’s important to research the different gorilla families in national parks to choose the best one near your starting point. Always consult your tour agent to see if you can join a specific group. The agent’s expertise is crucial since group locations change each year, and what was easy to track previously may now be farther from the park information offices.
